Mahasamund : A Rising Hub of Milk based Products in Chattisgarh

Introduction

Mahasamund is a district in the part of Chhattisgarh. In Mahasamund people do a lot of farming. Take care of animals. These things are all connected to how people live in the areas. Mahasamund is famous for growing crops and its culture.. Now dairy farming is also becoming very important for the local economy.
The government of India has a plan called One District One Product. Under this plan “Milk-Based Products” have been identified as the One District One Product of Mahasamund.
They chose Milk-Based Products because many people in Mahasamund have cows and other animals. Dairy farming helps people in the villages earn some money. Mahasamund has a lot of cows, buffaloes and other animals. The Animal Husbandry Department says that in 2012 there were 3.62 lakh cows and around 41,799 buffaloes in the district. There are also animal hospitals to help the people who take care of these animals.
In Mahasamund milk is very important. It gives farmers an income. People can also make products from milk, like curd, paneer, ghee and sweets. With the One District One Product plan the people of Mahasamund can make their Milk-Based Products business even stronger.

Why Milk-Based Products Were Selected as Mahasamund’s ODOP

The main idea of the One District One Product initiative is to find products that are closely linked to a district’s economy and then help with making them known, improving how they are made, selling them and reaching new customers. The official ODOP website for Chhattisgarh has listed Milk Based Products for Mahasamund.
This choice makes sense because dairy farming is already something that happens in the district. A report about the district’s growth says that dairy is a key way for farmers to earn extra money and that it can be done using the resources that farmers already have. The same report says that Mahasamund produces more than 60 metric tonnes of milk every day according to a study on dairy farming in the area.
This is a start for developing ODOP. By starting something completely new the project can help improve an activity that farmers already know.
Milk also has another advantage. It can be made into different products. Fresh milk does not last long but if it is made into paneer, ghee, curd, khoa, butter or sweets it can last longer, be worth more and help people earn more money. This makes dairy processing a choice for people who run businesses in rural areas and for groups of farmers.

The Dairy Farming Ecosystem of Mahasamund

Dairy development in Mahasamund is strongly linked to the district’s economy. The district has a rural population and raising animals can give farmers another way to earn money in addition to growing crops. The district’s official data shows that more than 10 lakh people live here and most of them live in areas.
Cattle and buffalo raising can work well with crop farming in ways. Leftover crops from farming can be used as food for the animals and the waste from the animals can be used as fertilizer for the fields. Dairy farming can therefore become part of a combined farming system of being a separate activity.
The value of dairy is also shown through the support systems in the district. Mahasamund has hospitals, places where animals get medicine, a lab that studies diseases and a mobile team that helps with animal health. These places help farmers with the health of their animals, how to breed them and how to take care of them.
The district government also has programs related to raising animals. One of them is a State Funded Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme that wants to increase milk production and make farmers’ lives better. The department also helps with breeding of animals and growing more food for them.
These steps are important because the amount and quality of milk produced depend not on how many animals there are but also on what the animals eat, how healthy they are, how they are bred, how clean the milking is and how easy it is to get help from the vets.

Cooperatives and Collective Participation

Dairy development works well when individual farmers are connected through organised collection and marketing systems. This means that farmers can work together to collect milk test the quality, transport it, process it and then sell it. Cooperatives and farmer groups are very helpful for producers because they can do all these things together.
Mahasamund is a place where cooperatives are very strong. In fact the National Cooperative Database found that Mahasamund has the dairy cooperatives in all of Chhattisgarh. They found “181 dairy cooperatives” in Mahasamund.
This is an advantage for the district’s ODOP strategy. When dairy farmers work together they can get access to markets, equipment, technical knowledge and processing facilities. This is something that they might not be able to do on their own.
A good cooperative model can also help set standards for milk quality and hygiene. This is very important when dairy products are sold in markets, not just local ones. Dairy products need to be of quality and hygienic and cooperatives can help make sure of this. The dairy cooperatives in Mahasamund can really help the dairy farmers in the district by doing all these things.

A Successful Example from Godbahal

Dairy-based rural development has a lot of potential. We can see this in the example of Godbahal Gram Panchayat in Mahasamund. This village had a milk production cooperative to start with.. Then they got some financial help, training and better equipment to process the milk. Because of this the milk production went up from around 100 to 150 liters per day to about 1,500 liters per day.
The cooperative then started making products and created the “Gau” brand. This has been really good for the people living there. The dairy farming initiative supports around 100 families. They earn about ₹5 to ₹6 lakh every month.
This example shows us that dairy farming is not about individual people producing milk. It can be something that the whole community does. It can help the community economically. It also shows that when local people work with technology, training, processing and branding good things can happen.
These examples are really useful for ODOP. They show that the district does not have to start its dairy economy from nothing. The district can take the community models that already exist and make them stronger. Then they can use these models in areas that are suitable.

Role of Farmers and Women in Dairy Development

Dairy farming is really important to people because it can be a part of life for families who live in rural areas. Women who live on farms can help with things like feeding the animals, milking them, taking care of the places where the animals live, making dairy products and selling those products to people in their area.
When dairy farming gets more organized these things can turn into businesses that make money. Groups of women who help each other can even. Sell things like ghee, paneer, curd and traditional sweets.
The ODOP framework can do more than just help sell products. It can also help people start their businesses, create jobs in rural areas and give people more ways to make money.
Dairy farming can create jobs in areas, such as collecting milk, transporting it, taking care of the animals supplying food for them, processing the milk packaging it tests to make sure it is good, selling it in stores and marketing it to people. This can all happen at the district level. It can be a big help to a lot of people.

Importance of Quality, Hygiene and Modern Processing

For Mahasamunds milk-based products to get to people the milk-based products must be of good quality and safe to eat. The traditional dairy products are really popular in the area but to sell them in more places the milk-based products need to be consistent.
To keep the milk-based products the people need to milk the cows in a clean way, store the milk properly, keep it cold, check the quality and process it in a clean place. If the milk-based products are packaged in a way they will last longer and people will trust them more.
The small dairy entrepreneurs can also learn things like how to process food packages, label it, keep accounts and market it on the internet. By just selling the milk-based products in the nearby villages the entrepreneurs can slowly start selling them in towns and cities all over Chhattisgarh.
The internet and computers can really help with this change. The small producers can use payments to take orders online, market their products on social media and sell them on the internet to reach more people who buy the milk-based products.

 Branding Mahasamund’s Dairy Products
The One District One Product scheme has an opportunity to create a regional identity that people will know about.
A strong dairy brand from Mahasamund can show people that it is about production, farmer participation and quality processing. If the packaging looks good the products are always of the standard and the labels are clear then the local dairy products can compete with the bigger brands.
They can make things, like ghee, paneer, curd and traditional sweets in sizes so that households, restaurants and big buyers can all purchase them.
Mahasamund district can also try to promote its dairy products at exhibitions, food fairs, local festivals and One District One Product events that the government supports. If all the producers have a regional identity then people will notice them more and they can still keep their own businesses.

Challenges in the Dairy Sector

The dairy sector has a lot of potential but it also faces many problems. Milk is a product that can go bad quickly so we need to collect it, cool it and transport it efficiently. Small farmers have a time getting the modern equipment they need and they also have trouble getting their milk to good markets where it can be sold.
The quality of the milk products can be bad if we do not follow the steps every time we process them. We also need to keep the milk cold when we transport it or it will go bad. If we do not have cold storage we cannot send the milk products to places that are very far away.
The dairy sector also needs to find ways to make the animals produce milk. We need to get breeds of animals, give them good food, take care of their health, keep their homes clean and use good dairy management techniques.
We need to work to solve these problems. This means that dairy farmers, cooperatives, government departments, banks, milk processors and private companies all need to cooperate with the dairy sector to make things better.

The Future of Mahasamund’s Milk-Based Products

The future of Mahasamunds dairy sector is about moving away from just selling raw milk. We need to create a “value-added dairy ecosystem” in Mahasamund.
Mahasamund has a lot of things going for it already. We have a lot of animal farmers who live in areas, people who take care of animals, dairy cooperatives and government programs that help people who raise animals. The fact that we have milk-based products under ODOP is also a help. It gives us a way to brand, process. Sell these products.
Now we need to focus on things. We need to make our milk collection centers better, improve the way we keep milk cold, build processing units, teach entrepreneurs new skills and make our packaging look nice. Farmer producer organizations, cooperatives and self-help groups can do a lot more to process and sell dairy products.
There are a lot of opportunities to make kinds of dairy products that people want to buy. We can make ghee and sweets that people who like local food will love. We can also make paneer, yoghurt and flavored milk that people who live in cities will like. If we make sure our dairy products are of quality we can sell them in other places, outside of Mahasamund. This will help Mahasamunds dairy sector to grow and “value-added dairy ecosystem” will become a reality.

Conclusion

Mahasamund has chosen **Milk-Based Products as its One District One Product**. This is closely connected to the district’s agricultural and livestock-based economy. The people of Mahasamund do dairy farming. This gives them extra money while turning milk into other products creates opportunities for people to start their own businesses and get jobs.
The district has a lot of livestock and a good network of cooperatives veterinary care and successful community-based dairy businesses that can help it grow in the future. The government is helping dairy businesses improving animals and developing food for them which can make this ecosystem even stronger.
The real potential of Mahasamunds “Milk-Based Products as its One District One Product” is not about producing more milk but about turning the milk produced in Mahasamund into high-quality products that are special to Mahasamund. If the milk is processed, packaged and branded better and if people have access to technology and markets then dairy can become a better source of income for families, in rural areas.
From the farmer who takes care of an animals that give milk to the cooperative that collects milk the person who turns milk into other products and the person who buys the final product every stage of the dairy business can help Mahasamunds economy grow.
The “One District One Product” initiative gives Mahasamund a chance to turn a rural activity into a modern and organized dairy industry that is focused on the market while keeping farmers and local communities at the center of its growth.
